NEDERLAND - THE NETHERLANDS

Nederland (the Netherlands) is a relatively small Western European country, bordering the North Sea. Water has not only shaped the lands but also the lives of its inhabitants, the Dutch, since time immemorial. They won the battle against the unrelenting waters thereby claiming land from the very sea that had previously inundated their homelands. In the 17th century the Dutch took the opportunity to expand overseas, creating the first Worldwide trading company, the V.O.C. (The United East India Company.) The sea is a recurring theme in Pekel's repertoire.

MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE

Traditional Dutch music is no longer commonly played. The heyday of original folk music in the Netherlands is long gone. Like elsewhere, radio and television have replaced the need for popular music. A small group of enthusiasts, against all odds, is trying to maintain, revive and reconstruct the disappearing rich music culture of the ancient Dutch. More source material is being published than ever before.

FOLK GROUP PEKEL

The ensemble Pekel performs exuberant folk music from the Low Lands in its own inimitable style. The musicians of Pekel play on a mix of traditional instruments such as bagpipes, cisterns and Jew’s harps and ‘modern’ instruments like guitar, accordion and double bass. The members of Pekel are not only interested in ancient Dutch written sources, but also in the music recorded by ethnomusicologists during the 19th century. In recent years they have included more of their own compositions into their repertoire.
